EXIT of the DAY:  I-287/87 EXIT 10s; To Nyack, New York and South Nyack, New York, and across Hudson River on the  New Tappan Zee Bridge aka Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge

Ok Now Road Trippers, time for a Road Test. The winner of this Road Test can get a Free Small Coffee at the Dunkin Donuts off upcoming EXIT 10 South. So get right and get ready for the Fast Facts.

Picture this. Capable of lifting 12 Statue Of Liberties, the world's strongest crane has a lifting arm that is taller than a 30 story building!  And if you want to see it, continue to drive over the Governor Mario Cuomo Bridge.

Not long ago this bridge, now named for a popular Italian American Governor,  was called the Tappan Zee Bridge which in Dutch means “Tappan Sea”.  Incidentally, the crane won't be there much longer, but the wide blue span of Hudson River will remain for eternity.

Apparently the super crane and the bridge have many names.  As reported on the website for the New New York bridge the  briefly named "I Lift New York" super crane helped build the new Tappan Zee  Bridge and currently dismantles the old bridge.

The Crane's extraordinary lifting power helped reduce construction time by months and it reduced project costs by millions. Still, the cost of the Crane ain’t cheap.  The super crane costs $10,000 per day to rent this little monster. Yup. You heard me right.  10 “Large” per day, as they say around here.

For 3 years the huge lifting capability of the floating crane enabled Tappan Zee Constructors to pre-fabricate long sections of the new  bridge off-site. That saved both time and money. It also improved project safety and quality.

The super crane precisely placed those giant prefabricated sections. It also removed the  old 60 year old bridge in huge chunks, speeding up the deconstruction.
Some time in the near future you may see pieces of the old bridge lying along New York Beaches. They will be repurposed to stop erosion all along Long Island, New York.

Registered with the  United States Coast Guard as the Left Coast Lifter, the super crane was instrumental to completing the new bridge on schedule by the end of 2018.
Now for the Road Test: How many Statue of Liberties can the Left Coast Lifter lift? You have 3 seconds. Three… and Two… and One. If you said 12, you were correct. Get right to Exit and get that Dunkin Coffee. Just tell em The Left Coast Lifter sent you.
