I-95 Exit 31b a in FL To: FL 816, Oakland Park Blvd Snowbirds wing south in the autumn and then all winter long seeking Florida’s tropical lifestyle. Many come for the winter. Some stay for life. Many others come for the winter and then they stay for the life-STYLE! Speaking of birds and maybe birdcages (think Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, and Hank Azaria's 1996 Movie "The Birdcage"), Wilton Manors is now a permanent roosting spot for a vibrant gay community. In short, the place rocks all seasons. Gays frequent its many gay-owned businesses and night spots along the happening main drag, Wilton Drive. But it is not all swinging. Kinda like Florida as a whole, folks tend to be more settled here. The U.S. Census reported that it is second only to Provincetown, Massachusetts in the proportion of gay couples relative to the total population. Foretelling perhaps the Presidential Candidacy of Pete Bouttigieg, one local mayor, Gary Resnick, proudly discusses his male partner in the City’s official documents. A city web page also highlights LGBT life in Wilton Manors. It states that "the City of Wilton Manors Police Department conducts police training that is geared toward working with the City’s LGBT population and has gay and lesbian officers amongst its ranks.” Frankly, it is plainly obvious that the town is progressive. I mean, the Police Cars have Rainbows on them! As if that was not telling enough, Wilton Manors contains a large Pride Center, the World AIDS Museum and Educational Center, and a branch of the Stonewall National Museum & Archives, whose main facility is in neighboring Fort Lauderdale. While most of the gay guesthouses are to be found in neighboring Fort Lauderdale, a growing number are being established in Wilton Manors.
So like Florida itself, it is not about settled retirement anymore. Florida's diverse communities are becoming a magnet for all ages, and all types of snowbird. #Gays #WiltonManors #Snowbirds #Birdcage #LaCageauxFolles #Florida
